This multi-tiered interactive workshop is designed to support friends and community members to not only build the skills to support survivors in self-determination but to better understand how to support people who batter in accountability. Centered around a fictional activist queer couple in an abusive relationship, this workshop will use scenarios to engage participants in small groups to think through a series of questions. We will look at how friends and family can support survivors of domestic violence and discuss the role of communities in supporting survivor self-determination and accountability for people who batter. This series is based on 5 working assumption: 1) Everyone deserves support; 2) There are gaps between our desire to support people who are in abusive relationships and our current ability to do so; 3) For many LGBTQ folks current systems (criminal legal) have major barrier and are often not seen as viable interventions; 4) When we support people who batter in their own accountability we are honoring their humanity; 5) Centering survivor self-determination is essential in creating the condition possible to support loving equitable relationships. This interactive workshop will ask participants to explore how to balance the tensions of survivor self-determination and accountability for people who batter.
