This presentation will review the development and strategies of the national movement to free Marissa Alexander as a case study for building a legal defense committee for survivors of domestic and/or sexual violence who are being prosecuted or imprisoned. A panel of organizers will reflect on strategies, learning curves, coalition building, and recommendations. We will then have a group discussion about how to leverage this work to free more survivors from prison in the future. Participants will review the movement to free Marissa Alexander; develop an understanding of what's involved with building and sustaining a legal defense committee; engage in conversations about the complications of a defense committee for survivors of domestic and/or sexual violence who are being prosecuted or imprisoned; and discuss best practices and ideas for the future for this kind of organizing.
